Yes, all SE bulbs must have the glass shield.

Very true but....

If you think the bulbs are going to be close enough to the waters surface to have water splash on them, you are better off with shields to protect the bulbs from cracking Hot bulbs splashed with water will crack easily.

lol all....the fixture will be about 8" from the water.....i will be using 400W X 3 SE....i guess i ll see when i install it if there's any water splash

That is relatively close to the water....I would put the glass on. Mine are 16 inches from the water and they still get some splash....

I had it at the same height with no probs & with jumping wrasses....
