The 250 watt MH actually sits in a retro fit kit that has a polished aluminum reflwctor and a UV glass shield. It also doesn't sit on the acrylic pendant it's actually raised up off of it.

With all due respect to you guys. I want to congratulate you on your 'pioneer' method. Without trying these new things out we'd never make any progress. However, this utilization of acrylic has the potential for a catastrophic failure. Hanging a MH acrylic light fixture over a tank of salt water is dangerous.
I DON'T WANT TO SEE ANYONE HURT. Acrylic is not a suitable material for high intensity lighting and saltwater.
Please reconsider your use of this fixture.
Like I said, pioneering is what directs us towards new and innovative ways to progress in this hobby (and in life in general). Using your gifted skills and innovative ideas in a test, using it AWAY from saltwater (or any water) for a test period of AT LEAST six months to a year would be advisable.

I cannot tell from the pictures, if there is any active cooling put into place. If not, just relying on air to provide the insulation between the metal and the acrylic is not a good idea in the long term. Acrylic over the long term will not handle the heat, resulting in heat distortions, and in the worst case melting of the acrylic. I have a melted MH retrofit JBJ nano hood sitting in my basement, if anyone wants to see it.

AGree with the bunch.
Must say its nice to see new things being tried, just not the right material for the application.
The heats gonna eventually get to the acrylic and when it does, it spells disaster.

The acrylic could do more than melt. After a few months in that environment it could become very brittle and crack. I'd hate to see it fall into the tank :sad2:

I can't believe the conversation that this has sparked. Its good that it gets us to talking which helps everyone!!!
Let me explain the pendant. This pendant is just a shell. There are no internal heat parts such as ballast. The ballast are all external. The only heat related item is in the 250 watt MH. It sits inside its own retro fit kit. The reflector doesn't sit on the acrylic it has standoffs similar to the T5 lights.
I think everyones concerns are valid and I would be the first to say that I agree wholeheardily with everyone who has concerns.
All I can speak of are from my experiences with using these pendants which I have done many times in the past over extended periods of time. I have never had a problem with them due to the acrylic melting! I believe they never have issues with melting because the reflector never actually comes into contact with the acrylic. I could be wrong but I can only speak from my own experiences!

so much negative vibes from people about your nice Pentant. I think it looks cool. This is what makes you diffrent from other vendors you have great skills with arcylic. I can see the heat issue if it is runned for long period of times during the day and maybe over a course of a half year to a year it's possible for failure. but if run in moderation and checked I think it will be fine. Of course a nice ceiling fan will help with heat issue in the general area of the pendant if that is a concern to certain reefers.
I wouldn't worry a true reefer will always check his/hers equipment on a regular basis so you can catch any failures before it actually happens.

The reason for the 'negative vibes' is for concern for JL. He's the end user. And this is not a situation where the coral might not grow or the fish might not like the light. It could result in a disaster of epic proportions. If the use of acrylic for this application was a good material, don't you think the mass manufacturers would have 'been there, done that' a long time ago?
In the end, you guys will do what you want. All I ask is that you monitor it EXTREMELY closely, preferably in a test environment that doesn't include water. I apologize upfront if I'm offending anyone. My concern for my fellow man extends beyond the possible line I might cross. Be safe, and truly, I hope it works and it is a big success. I think I made that clear in my first post. :grouphug:

Sometimes timers fail and the halides could run for an extended amount of time. This would make me very worried with an acrylic canopy. To rely on fans in not a good idea since they can fail.
This is not a negative vibe just my concern.
