PLEASE READ about the constant killing of marine life
Hello all. After looking at all of todays threads, as I do most everyday. I came across one that struck a nerve in me. It is the same old story of a LFS killing marine life. Well this isn't a LFS but a NFS, a national fish store, Petco. We've all witnessed the horrible living conditions that they keep marine animals in, so I decided to start a petition. Whether it will go anywhere, we'll see. The thread I read was this one that got me all p****off. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showt...hreadid=1372614
I don't see the difference between the actions of Petco and what Michael Vick did to those poor dogs. Unfortunately the general public don't consider marine animals as they would a dog or cat. Here's the written petition that I ask you read and sign and forward to all that care. I will forward this information to Petco directly, PETA, and all other authorities that pertain to the problem. I ask also ask that you take pictures and give the location of where these killings persist. Please continue to post your experiences and comments on this thread so that it will almost be as if was a "sticky" My e-mail is [email protected]. How do you compare a man who made animals fight to the death to petco?

I see horrible living conditions at most pet stores I have been to. Most of those living conditions are temporary.

I shop at petco and have successfully bought livestock there in the past. As a matter of face I have had more of a success rate with livestock bought there than at any other store.

< has never lost a fish that i got from petco, i could show u a store that makes petco look great. and as chief stated, there is no comparison to what vick was doing and a fish store. not like they put aggressive fish or fish that will eat other fish together, or atleast not the one up by me. glad to see the passion, but how much money or frags have you donated to place's trying to save reef's ? how much of the stuff you have isn't tank raised or grown ?

There are many many things wrong with chain stores and also smaller mom and pop stores as well. Comparing Petco to Vick is a bit of a stretch to say the least.

I see your intentions are good, but honestly I don't see much good coming of an online petition. It is to easy for people to click and sign, they don't have much real impact on issues. Written statements, printed letters, faxes etc. are much more effective in many instances.

The general publics perception of marine life and also dogs, cats and small fuzzy critters is a big time mess. From poor harvesting practices to puppy mills it is a vicious cycle.

The way I see it is this, our only hope for change to happen is to educate those up and coming pet owners. Taught responsible pet ownership and how to purchase a pet from an ethical place, regardless if it has fins or fur.

Good luck with your petition, hoping you succeed to eliminate the unfairness and mistreatment you percieve. (mind you there are Petco establishments that do treat their livestock better than others).

Forward this to one of those organizations and you might have a problem as well, they are fanatics that have no problem breaking into your home to liberate your fish. I have actually seen that before. Actually saw one of them punch another one of them because they admitted to owning a dog as a pet in secret. Awareness starts with you, remember that.

So I guess it's American capitalism at it's finest. What ever measure it takes it ok, and hey since everyone else is doing than it's fine. Thats crap, yes there are lfs that do a poor job of keeping animals but not a multi-million dollar corporation that has far more animals lives in their hands. Listen I'm not some PETA nut and the Michael Vick comment was a stretch, but come on is ok for them to put a sps or clam under a 40 watt incandescent bulb with poor water quality? I'm not trying to change the world. I'm just upset at people not caring about anything else but themselves. Hey look I bought something from Petco and its doing great!!!!!!! Who cares about all the other animals that died before and after.

Awareness starts with you as well. Be aware that by buying fish from these people you are encouraging them to buy more. As one employee of Petco said, "if we sell 50 dollars worth of reef fish than we can order 150% times $50 more fish the next week. Thats a great formula for our hobby to live by. Regards, Tim

Where do you get your animals from ? You have a point somewhere in all that rant. I have seen some miserably kept animals at Petcos and some that were ok. If you want to be more effective and reasonable, pinpoint specific Petco's where you see really bad problems ( keep the list small ) and type up a very cordial and professional letter. Start off by saying how much you love shopping at Petco and feel they do a good service to pet owners but the conditions at certain Petcos ( x,y and z ) leave you very dissapointed because a b and c ( be specific ). You would ike to know what the Petco corp. policy is and if anything can be done to improve the conditions at x, y and z. Then make a bunch of copies, have your firends sign and mail them. You might see a change.

Ironically phoenix it was at a lincoln center protest of a fashion show and it was too funny to actually do anything about. By the time we stopped laughing the girl left who got punched.

Tim I see your point but somewhere in the initial post it is bogged down by too many other things. Best bet is like mentioned before, report the individual stores. I ask you this, did you happen to look at their freshwater, reptile, small animal, and bird department as well? if you're going to take up the battle survey all of the battlefield not just a little skirmish on that battlefield.

Just an FYI petco has a police with most of their animals if they look like they need rehab or they are having problems they take those animals to a vet or try to adopt them out to people who can properly rehab them.
