Hi everyone,

I am excited to say that I’m about to start my first reef tank and would love some advice on what to expect during the setup and early stages. I have been researching and watching videos, but there’s a lot of information out there, and I want to make sure I’m taking the right steps.

My tank is going to be around 55 gallons, and I plan on focusing on a mix of soft and hard corals with some beginner-friendly fish. I’d love to hear about:

  • The most common mistakes beginners make when setting up a reef tank.
  • Tips for maintaining good water parameters and avoiding algae issues.
  • Recommended equipment – filters, lighting, and any other essentials that I might not have thought of.
If you have any experiences, tips, or must-have products that helped you when you were starting out, I’d really appreciate hearing from you!

Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome!

-start with live rock, not dry rock
-let your tank fully cycle before adding any livestock
-quarantine all fish or buy from qt vendor before adding to the tank
-take it slow

It's almost near impossible not to have an algae outbreak in the beginning. Its part of the initial cycle of the tank often referred to as the "ugly" stage. Like others have said just take it slow and watch the initial ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels rise and fall before adding anything. Have fun with it! Starting a new tank is fun part!
