I have a tribe.net account and one of the ads on there this morning was posted by a young lady who is concerned that bees are becomming an endangered creature.

Ok fine, whatever.

Then I scrolled down to see she is selling jewelry for the purpose of helping save the bees. Jewelry she says is made from Bone, fossil and horns.

Ok fine, whatever.

Then I saw she was selling a necklace with a dried seahorse as the centerpiece. Money which she intends to donate to save the bees.

Does anyone see the hypocrisy in this besides me?
Color me annoyed.

Of course I sent her a polite lecture on how she was perpetuating the very thing she was trying to protect and pointed out the hypocrisy. She emailed back trying to justify what she was doing by stating it was ok to use this seahorse as jewelry because she found it dead on the beach. Ok, so if you find a dead bald eagle or gray whale on the beach it's ok to use their parts to make jewelry too?

Feel free to chime in at her if you care at all.

It just really annoyed me at her flippant attitude about saving bees yet she doesnt see how she is perpetuating the problems seahorses have by selling one.

We don't rely on seahorses for food, for our existence the way we do with bees. I won't say that I have no feelings or regrets that humans are exterminating any species, but in the grand scheme of things, "saving" (already dead?) seahorses is really more of a "feel good" than anything else. This is, of course, a situation we humans created.

Just think of the ramifications suffered by humans should our little honeybees disappear, but don't just look at it through a westerner's eyes.

By the way, yeah, I do think it's ok to use something you found, even if it's parts of a bald eagle or a gray whale or whatever it is. I don't think that you should have to be part of a special group, although I certainly understand why we have the laws we do regarding the use of such animal parts.

Edit:

Ok, I just visited her store and.. well, it's rather macabre! As long as it brings no harm, whatever floats your boat. There is a bit of a "sick" factor to all these pieces of dead things she's selling.

8O The dyed chicken foot necklace was a bit over the top, round the bend and out of the park wierd. She is also using red coral (which is endangered) in her jewelry, which is IMhhhO far more destructive in terms of environmental impact than using a seahrose she found dead on the beach.

Oh, I missed the coral pieces! Whenever I see HSN or QVC selling real coral jewelry, I start making phone calls. Of course, it's been quite a while since I've watched HSN or QVC (usually only when I'm in the market for something specific), so.. yeah.
