right now its a homemade setup ghetto as hell. homemade wooden canopy and wired up the dual 175w metal halide lighting myself. got too hot inside so i keep the lid open with kitchen hand towels shading the lights from making the room too bright held in place by stones placed on the canopy (im not joking) cheapo aluminum reflector thats now starting to peal and old school tar ballasts which make my setup incompatible with most modern bulbs. really its a wonder anything grows at all but i have alot of montis growing.

im looking for a new lighting system. basically a self contained hood that rests above the tank on legs but has enough height for me to be able to work in the tank (i hear some systems have legs too short to allow you to work in the tank)

are 150k hqi comparable to 175w regular halides?

id like a combo halide/ actinic system (power compacts or vho, doesnt matter)
and yes i know you can run 20k's but i want the real actinics.

people were telling me about corallife, helios, etc. i dont know whats good.

fans are very important to get the heat away from the tank because im not running a chiller, i just have a fan blowing across the lights.

the tank is a 4ft long 60gal

any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know if you've considered T5s or not but they run cool and produce a lot of PAR. I'm running 4 - 54w on my 110 gallon with SPS, LPS and Softies. It's not quite enough to do acros but a friend had a similar set-up on her 75 and her acros were doing great. Another is using 8 on his 110 and has everything too. I may move up to 6 a bit later due to my tank depth.

I have to admit that I do somewhat miss the shimmer of MH but the cooler temp more than makes up for it. Just something else for you to think about.

I went with the Aqualight Pro HQI by Coralife. It is a MH/PC combo. I love it. It has built in cooling fans, and 3 plugs (Moonlights, Actinics, and wire to xternal ballast). The legs are about 4" so I bought the Suspension kit with it to hang it from the ceiling.

my friend bought the coralife 48" 150 metal halid/power compact with the legs and it is too small to get into the tank to work on it.
I bought the 72" current outer orbit extreme, same thing the size of the light and the length of the legs prevents me from doing work to my tank. on monday/tuesday a friend of mine (Mr.X as some of you know him) is coming up to my house to help me hang them from the cieling. if that is an option for you it could look good. i will be posting pictures most likely on my tank thread after we are done.
