I can imagine myself buying one, and it dying in a week. I would never buy a fish over 25 dollars again.

Oh, can i see a list of the fish you have in your tank?

Kevin, you've caught my attention. What can you get for under $25? I know online there are lots of small fish for under $25, but you have to include shipping. At my local stores, I can't even get a cleaner shrimp for under $25. I think I've seen a total seven or eight fish for under $25 here. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be haggling?

Kevin, right now, I only have five fish:
Mated pair of Cirrhilabrus earlei
Mated pair of Cirrhilabrus rhomboidalis
Terelabrus sp. (not rubrivitattus)

I had a pair of Helfrichi and one other Terelabrus. They disappeared in a span of a week, and I figured out my fast growing bubble coral was eating fish. I removed it 2 months ago and have lost no more fish.

I plan on 3-4 more fish, but I'm waiting patiently for the ones I want. Possibilities include Genicanthus personatus pair, Holanthias fuscipinnis, Zebrasoma rostratum, Liopropoma aurora, and/or Bodianus Sanguiness.

Len, you probably already know this but Twilight lists B. Sanguiness as coming soon. Maybe you'll soon have a new addition to your tank? I noticed you seem to like a lot of deeper dwelling fish. Do you see any detriment to keeping them in tanks with bright halide lighting?

Yep, I'm hoping Brian has a sanguiness for me. Honestly, if I could get all my fish from Twilight, I'd be a happy camper (top notch, healthy stuff at good prices).

I've found no problems housing any deepwater fish in bright tanks.

RobertoVespucci-
I was actually kidding, but you can get a lot of fish for under 25 dollars. Blennies, damsels, clownfish (some)...

Len-
Is the Bodianus you were talking about the sunrise hogfish? Or a name that sounds similar?

How did you choose the dimensions of your tank? Why 52x28x28 - to fit a special space?

Are you still pleased with the quality of the tank that was built? How does the starfire look/hold up?

thanks,
jayo

Len,

Frankly, I think you would have major compatibility problems with a Bodianus sanguineus in the same aquarium as fairy and flasher wrasses, as well as firefish and that Terelabrus. Most of the specimens I've seen collected for the aquarium trade have been medium to large adults, which pose a threat to smaller fish, especially smaller wrasses.

I assume since you keep fairy wrasses that your tank is covered. Bodianus are accomplished jumpers as well. :)

jayo,

The tank is holding up well. No complaints. The size was chosen due to space constraits (width, mostly).

Greg,
I worry about the L.aurora eating the female wrasses (I probably won't get it) but I'm willing to gamble on a B.sanguiness. Twilight can collect smaller specimens (3-4") but even a mature 5-6" one shouldn't eat 3" wrasses. Aggression is another story, but I haven't had problems mixing Cirrhilabrus and Bodianus (opercularis and masudai) in the past. If I end up with the B.sanguiness, I wouldn't house any more firefish. The remaining Terelabrus is a solid 4-5" (big specimen). Some photos of my fish can be seen in the Collector's forum here.

Yep, the tank's top is secure. I'm not crazy enough to risk a jumping C.earlei (not a fish I'll likely get an opportunity to acquire again). FYI: My C.earlei pair does regular courting rituals each night; the male is a sex machine. During these courtships, they often dash up quickly and leave the water several inches 8O

Len,

Yeah, any of the large Liopropoma will eat smaller fish. My L. eukrines has eaten Pseudochromids. :)

I still think Bodianus sanguineus mixed with fairy wrasses = trouble, but you'll tell us how it goes. :)

I am seriously thinking that something has happened to Len's tank.

Did you have a crash, Len? Did you lose a lot of corals?

Peace,

Chip
