Carpet deodorizers, are they harmfull?

Living with two dogs, it's come time to throw down some carpet deodorizer and vacumn it back up to freshen up the house.

I have a vacumn with a hepa filter on it, so Im wondering if anyone else around here uses the carpet deodorizers on their carpets?

It's the white powder stuff that you sprinkle on your carpet, wait 15 minutes then vacumn it up.

Does the packaging say what's in it? Many cleaning products will list the active ingredients near the health precautions section.

Just on a hunch, I'd say it'd be very harmful if you dumped the stuff right in the tank. I don't know how much the tank would absorb through gas exchange and particulate matter settling onto the water's surface though. Perhaps you could seal the top of the tank with saran wrap or something, turn the filters/fans off, do your carpet sprinking / vacuuming, open the windows for a half hour to air the place out, then get your tank going again. Maybe that would work?

I doubt it would be of concern as long as the powder itself didn't become introduced into the system. That being said, air pumps are a good means of doing this. To be save, cover with a blanket or other means any areas where it could be introduced. Hwa's pretty much spot on about it. An aside, we just got somma that Saran that "self-sticks" to just about anything, and so far it is the shiznit!

Personal experience - I have 2 ankle biters that leave hair everywhere. I use that powder crap that u sprinkle on the carpet, wait 10 min, and then vacuum. I have never had a problem with it getting in my tank or any other problems.

I did this before and the next day almost everything in my tank was dead. Seems that the vacum somehow circulated the stuff into the air, the ceiling fans then picked it up and distributed it nicely around the living room, including the tank. The fish all had symtems similar to ammonia burn, caused by high ammonia levels. Only 2 clownfish survived the ordeal. I will never use carpet deodorizers again, better to steam clean the carpets IMO.

We did a bug bomb in a place with a FO tank recently, just covered the tank with garbage bags and duct tape to seal everything. Everything's fine. Don't use duct tape on acrylic BTW.

What happens w/ duct ape on acrylic?

If I remember correctly it sort of melts the acrylic, I seem to remember doing this ages ago, and found when I pulled off the duct tape, it left behind some of the gray which couldnt be removed, so I assumed it melted into the acrylic, and you couldnt scrape it with a razor being acrylic.

The tape sticks to it and if you use chemicals to remove it, the acrylic will cloud or melt. If you scrape it well.... you know the rest

Luckily they only got some on the top edge of the tank where it's noticeable. I was still pretty pissed though. Would have used scotch tape, m'self.
