I have wondered about lighting calculations. why we calculate gal.in the tank before live rock and sand are added and not after the displacement of such things. anybody have answers to this??
Because the calculation is so rough that it does not matter much even if you multiply the gallon value by a factor of 3 :?
Seriously, watt per gallon is not a very good "rule of thumb" anyway. How much light you need depend on what you want to keep, where you put them, and what type of light you have.
I agree with tangir1. You need to factor in the depth of the tank as well as what you are going to keep in it. You might get some recomendations if you explain what tank you have or are buying as well as what you plan on stocking it with.
all righty,
well I have a 125 gal,140 lbs live rock 4-5 inch sand bed, (4) 6ft. uri vho tubes=640 watts. tanks been up for a year. I would like some frog spawn, hammer corals. what do I need?
Sounds like you have enough light for the LPS corals like frog spawn and hammer. Best bet is to get a frag from local reefers, since they grow pretty fast compare to other hard corals.
