My 20g nanoreef is 9 months old and algae is going to start me to drink. I am getting some kind of grass on my LR. I added some base rock about 3 months ago and it is getting on it also. It even gets in the corner of the tank. The rock turns green and then here comes the grass. It doesn't look like hair algae to me. Mine is bright green and looks like a small weed. After a few days it gets thicker. The hair algae I have seem was a brownish green and very thick. This looks kinda like maidens grass or turf grass after it thickens up.
My phos. and nitrate are both at 0 and have been all the time. The temp is 78 to 80. The sal. .023 and KH is 12. I use 175 watts MH at 12 inches above water line. For about 10 day's the photoperiod is 5 hours.
I have 12 astrea snails, 1 emerald crab, 3 blue leg hermit and 1 red leg hermit. I have been told to get a Lawnmower Blenny after being told to get the emerald. The emerald doesn't eat any algae but coraline. I'm afraid to invest 26.00 for a Blenny that want eat it. I was told the emerald would eat hair and bubble algae. Wrong. I do a 10 to 15% wc about every 5 day's. I also run a protein skimmer.
I need somebody that can tell me what to do. I really can afford to buy whiskey now.

Can you get pics? We might be better able to ID the algae. Unfortunately, sometimes certain types of algaes are very difficulty to get rid of once entrenched.

$26.00 for an algae blenny. That is ridiculous. I have a lawnmower and a black sailfin algae blenny and they were only $12.00 apiece. Sorry a little off topic but that just amazes me.

Yep, local LFS want $26.00. I want gladly pay that, if he would eat the algae. But , so far, I have never bought anything that did what it was suppose to do. Pep. shrimp(anemone control), crabs and all.
I will post pics of the algae soon.

It appears to be some sort of hair algae similar to Bryopis or Derbesia. Large tangs seem to work as well as algae blennies. Removing by hand will also allow your snails to keep it low.

The problem is that you added base rock which does not have a good base of bacteria or calcareous algae to limit harmful algae growth. Even in very low nutrient water base rock may still get some algae growth which will subside if the good algaes can grow. Looks like you'll be hand picking for a while. I think most of us have done it at one time or another. It's not uncommon on a 9 month old tank to have these problems.

Good luck,

Thanks for your and LordNikon's knowledge on this mess. Seems that you are up on your statement because the algae appears to be mostly on the base rock. The snails aren't going to be any help, because they were there all the time. Yea, I'll be picking grass awhile. Thanks again.
