Uh oh... I've been swapping mine out when the water starts creeping up to the rim... about every 4 - 5 days. I don't bother rinsing it in the sink, I just wait until I have 4 or 5 of them and throw them in the washing machine with bleach.

I guess I should probably test my nitrates more. Not to hijack... but is Salifert still the preferred choice of test for Nitrate?

Is that ok to do? Throw them into the washer with bleach? I usually just try to rinse them out with some RO water as best as possible.

emps, make sure to use regular bleach. None of that scented stuff as it will take your tank in a matter of minutes. (so I hear anyway)

I wash mine with regular bleach and cold water, then send it through the cold rinse cycle a second them and let them air dry for a few days before I'll use any.

I've also heard to use cold water for the fear of copper piping on the hot water and residue from the hot water heater or whatever is used to heat the water.

I get lazy  and leave them in the tank for a week or so. I know that they need to be changed more often.
and he asks me why his PO4 is high. :irked:
Scented bleach won't kill the tank (my wife buys it), but it will f" up your skimmer for a while. Plain old clorox is best. As posted in the other thread, I use a scoop of oxyclean and a little bit of bleach... probably around 2 oz.

If's funny how most people preach that you should not use soap or detergent in any of your fish buckets and so on and no one has asked? what up with the soap we use in our washing machine..
I always run the washer once to make sure i can clear up the machine of any soap stuff from my last wash, then i wash my socks with oxy-clean and bleach. I've noticed that when you wash something white in cold water that has the stains you get from the stuff in the tank it usally looks pretty much the same when it comes out. thats why clothe that is white is washed in hot water to help debri from the items to be softed up for proper cleaning. So i use hot water. The point of the hot water holding copper from the pipes is a interesting subject that i will have to look into further, but for now Hot water it is.
I like my socks nice and white. White Usally means very clean.

Dave i never use hot water, im just playing it safe.... although i run the washing machine on a full cold water cycle rinse before i put the socks in. then i put the socks in with a small capful of bleach and do a wash cycle.. then i do another rinse cycle... im a little paranoid but it has worked very well..

me... I don't care. No extra cycles. No worries. Regular load. Warm with cold rinse. Oxyclean and a little bleach. Lay them out to dry. Usually what I do is... When I do laundry, there is a time lapse between 1 load drying and 1 load washing. When I take laundry out of the washer (I'm trying not to use the word "load" too often here... it gives Rich, aka "Butthead" ammo) I will throw my socks in to wash. After the socks are done, I can put more laundry in the washer and when it is done, the first load (damn) is done drying.
Efficiency. If you are wasting in this hobby, you are wrong.
