After days of cutting, gluing, testing, praying, and redoing all the things I just said I finally got my plumbing done! Whoohoo! Although, I didn't glue the Spider value good enough and one of the darn things drip! So I will need to buy another and redo it tomorrow. But besides that I filled it with water and it worked great (although I did find out my garage is really not level...it slopes down towards the driveway and scared me because side of the tank the waterline was on the top, the other side the water line was about an inch below the top!...so I didn't keep water in it long).

What your looking at:
1 190g Glass tank
2 Overflows
1 AmpMaster 3000 (closed loop)
1 AmpMaster 2100 (return from sump)
1 Euroreef CS8-2
More plumbing then I think my house has...(I should buy stock in Home Depot, I must have been there 20 times in the last week).

CAR!What kind of car could you fit that in to?Looks good Jason. One question,is there anything that supports the end of your returns to tank or does the PCV pipe hold its own weight hanging out there like that?I ask cause I would like to plumb a closed loop into my 180 and get rid of some PHs some time soon.

Looks good Jason. Why did you assemble all of this in the garage?
Steve

A couple reasons. The first is that this tank is replacing my old 60g and will be going in the same place...and I am going to transfer a lot of "life" from my 60g into this tank. It's also easier to work on it outside because I don't have to worry about spilling, scraps, mess, leaks, etc. If it were inside I would have trouble working behind the tank because it would be backed up against a wall.

Ok, not car, suburban with seats taken out. Yes the PVC can handle it's own weight. However I will probably add a string attached to the top of the stand just in case.

is the sump big enough? Have you filled it up and tested to see if it can handle all the water with the power off?

Yes I have tested it. The sump can be filled 10" high and still hold all the water when power is off (It's 16" high).

I'm also going to add another small tank next to the sump for a refugium so that should also help displace some water.

Just curious, but I didn't notice any unions or shutoff valves at the intake and exhaust of your pumps. You might want to consider installing them now while the tank is empty so you can perform maintenance. The last thing you'll want to do is empty your entire sump and return lines when if you even need to take a pump out to clean it or inevitably service it. Just my $0.02

The AmpMaster comes with unions on each manifold (pretty slick). You are right about adding shut off values. When I had a leak in the Spider fitting yesterday I noticed that I will have to drain the closed loop to get the water out! :? So today when I redo the Spider fitting I'm going to add two shut off values to the input/output of the closed loop.

Jason,

Where did you find those nozzels (grey pieces)? I looked at home depot but coundn't find any? What are they usually used for? That might help to find them. Thanks

You may have anwered this question in a previous thread, but here goes. Will the closed loop start automatically, or will you have to prime the pump? If you have to prime it, do you have to prime it again if you loose power?

Will the PVC up top be able to handle the heat and UV from the halides (assuming your getting MH). Is it schedule 40, 80, or something else?

Nice work BTW!

If your talking about the flexable ball socket pieces (on the end of closed loop pipes) then you can't get them from Home Depot (or I couldn't ever find them). Usually you can find them at your LFS but they charge an "arm and a leg" for them.

I bought all mine from Marine Depot. They are still expensive but so is everything else in our hobby

If you look at the top of the Closed Loop on both intakes there is a union. I am able to open one up, and fill it with water. That creates the siphon. You can also just blow in one of the outputs from the closed loop, that should start the siphon also.

The PVC is schedule 40. I think it should be able to take the heat (I hope so). If it starts to melt I will cry

Hey Jason that is a awsome tank, I am Remodeling my house taking out wall and moving thing around. Anyways I am going to be putting in a 140 gallon tall into the wall i may build my own tank cause it will cost a lot for what i want. It will be viewed from 3 sides and rounded at the end it should be nice. Well I wanted to say that I like the way you Plumbed the tank and gave me some idea's. Thats going to be a good looking tank when it is up and running. :D

Thank you. It's nice to get good relevant feedback and positive comments. I'm tired of everyone walking into the garage and saying, "How are you going to move that"..."Will it fit?"..."Why so big?"...so negative...everyone looks at me like I’m crazy…but once it's all in and setup I think I will change their perspective.
