that sucks hermits and snails usually ship very well, was there a heat pack in the box they came in? have you added any tank water in the bags yet?

What do you mean by "no signs of life"?

Are the snails in their shales or hanging out and motionless?

Try picking a hermit and snail up by it's shale and touching the animal (might us a pencil but don't poke it hard). If it does not retract then more than likely you got a box of bad luck.

Take a sniff of the bags. Snails and hermits REEEK when they're dead. If nothing is moving at all then you may be SOL.

ASAP call the mail order store and tell them exactly what happened with the shipment. If it is a reputable place they should remedy the problem.

Good Luck and I hope you don't have a bag of escargot and crab cakes.

PS. is the Starfish stiff or is it's little feet moving some on the underside?

I put them in the tank. Nobody moves when I touch them. Cleaner shrimp are on the attack. I really am just worried about the star . I emailed the guy and he says give them time and let him know what happens. Thanks If the star has not moved yet , do you think it is dead ?

If you turn the star over, you should see some signs of activity from the tube feet. If not, it probably has not survived. They are delicate enough as it.

Also a good idea to hold off ordering really delicate things during the winter...or at least the peak of it ;) I suspect a lot of animals died in shipments these past few days :(

Make sure you email them so you have a record of the DOA and get a full refund or credit from them

I just emailed the guy and he said he would credit me. Thanks for all your replies. Its a shame that they had to die.I told him I will wait until the weather gets warmer before I place another order. Thanks for the advice,I will print out his replies for my records.

also, i'd really avoid fedex and ups. they just have NOT a clue.

if those bags were really cold, my money's on "dead on arrival".

i've said this before, and imma say it again, avoid shipping in weather like this. it really does matter ('specially if you haven't got yourself a good, reliable, knowledgable shipper).

No doubt they were DOA. Learned my lesson. The store should have known better.I got an order from Saltwaterfish.com in the cold in december and it was great , but they load up the cooler with heat packs.

I had an excellent experience two weeks ago with FedEx from Marine Center. Shipped out of Texas at 10PM and arrived in Rochester, NY around 7AM. I had the box held at FedEx so I could pick it up ~9AM. It was around 20F here BTW. Water temperature was ~75F upon arrival as I recall. Also, FYI, FedEx turned out to be much faster than Delta Dash for me. I guess it all depends on where you are.
