Hi everyone, haven't been on for a bit as I've been busy setting up the sunroom. I have the tank in now!! My question is....my little 20 gallon is getting quite a bit of hair algae in it. There was a guy over the other day and he said to add emerald crabs, that they would take care of the algae. Just wondering about this and if they're safe with the corals? thanks. if you want to see how the room is coming along ..check out my album at www.community.webshots.com/user/honeygrey

Emeralds are safe around corals, you won't have a problem there. I agree though they won't do much in getting rid of the hair. A couple turbos would knock it out for you though.

Some emerald crabs deviate from the norm and eat or at least harass corals to death. For algae control I would use an alge blenny(sometimes not great algae eaters either, but will not touch corals) and a variety of snails. Snails like turbos, astreas, conchs(sandbed cleaners),abalone, and cerith snails.

They will clean out almost all macro algae out of your tank, not just valonia.

We have two emeralds and a sailfin, that we purchased to get rid of our bubble algae. I am not sure if we were supposed to read the instructions to them, or what. But after months of being in our tank, they have'nt even looked at it.

I intorduced an emrald crab into my reef a few years ago. Then i cought him happily munching away on some mushrooms.

Needless to say he was rounded up and taken back to the store. Sally lightfoot has been my choice ever since.

My emerald has been well behaved. I'm thinking about adding several more, I just hope they're as good as this one.
