In the past I've had a lot of trouble with the rio pump supplied with the Bakpak. I would run vinegar through it periodically and clean the tubes as suggested, but over time it just slowed down and the bubbles decreased and hence the skimmate became less and less.

A few months ago I converted to a maxijet 900 pump. Things went well for a while, but now I am observing the same routine of events.

What's the deal? Do I need to replace the pump approx. every 6 months? Would replacing the impeller be sufficient?

While I'm on the subject, what is better the MJ 900 or MJ 1200? I could be mistaken, but I believe the CPR website suggested the 900 saying it provided more contact time. However, last time I visited the site they were reccomending the 1200. I'm confused as usual.

I also use the MaxiJet 900. My problem is mostly with salt creep clogging the air intake tube. Has to be rinsed every third day.
I did notice a decrease in water movement, then pulled the PH for a regular cleaning with tap water & a toothbrush. Now back to full speed.

i use a maxijet 1200 for mine. i notice the salt building up in the air intake every now and again. i run about a cup of RO water through it about once per week and all is good.

Jason from Premium Aquatics recommended a Maxijet 900, so that is what I run on mine.

I have been on the CPR message board. IMHO the moderators are a little on the defensive with regard to their products. That is why I took Jason's advice - no bias.

My $0.02

Heat some topoff water(ro/di) for a minute in the micrwave and allow the air intake on the pump to suck it through. This will clean the air intake very effectively thus more bubbles and make it easier to become a little lazier
