OK I listened to the experts and replaced the crappy rio 1700 with a Mag 5. The foam still will not rise into the collection cup. It seems as if it gets stuck in the bottom third of the riser tube. Why won't this skimmer pull anything out. It is set-up above the water level and is on a 120 gallon tank. What is the deal?????

I have an EV-90 with a mag5. Did the skimmer pull foam with the 1700? If so have you adjusted the gate valve to compensate for the differences between the two pumps?

The water level must not exceed the horizontal divider, otherwise air won't get injected to create foam. The water level must not fall below 1/2" from the divider either. How long have you had the EV? It took about 4 days for my unit to break in and start producing some skimmate.

I have the EV150 with Mag9.5 for my 150G. Not the same unit, but the principle is the same!

The horizontal divider principle was never explained to me. It was not pulling any foam with the 1700, that is why I replaced it.

If you shine a light to the side of the EV90, you will see there is a divider toward the very top of the skimmer. That is the divider I am talking about. Water is injected slightly above the divider and when the jet stream hits the water, foam created. But, if the jet head is submerged in the water, foam will not produce.

Another way to look at it is that the bubbling water should not extend into the bottom of the riser tube. All adjustments to water level are done via the gate valve. It's simply a matter of adjusting water level and there is a delay in making the adjustment and when the skimmer settles down based on that adjustment. That's been my experience anyway. Once you get it set it's a great little skimmer in my opinion.

First off, the water level should be adjusted so its at the bottom of the foam tower when you look down through the skimmer. 2nd off, the skimmer works much better with a Mag 7 than the Mag 5.

I am also running a EV-90 with a Mag5. My skimmer does produce skimmate, but most of it was on the rising pipe but not in the collection cup! I have to clean the whole skimmer but not only the collection cup! Anyone experiencing this? If I rise the water level in the skimmer, the collection cup will be fill with water in just the matter of 1/2 day! Any one producing dry skimmate?

I am using a Mag5 with my EV90. It produces dry skimmate which will turn back into liquid form once it collects in the bootom of the collection cup. I clean the whole riser tube once a week.
No complaints from me on this skimmer.
IMO the mag5 is a better pump than the mag7. Do a search on the Mag7 and you will see they seem to have a problem restarting once they have been shut down.
Camel Shrimp.. If all else fails call Jason at Aqua-C. He will get you set up right.
