One thing you can do is have the overflow pipe submerged. You could also put a turn in the pipe just as it enters the water. The idea being to reduce the amount of turbulence. You could also install a baffle in the sump between where the water enters and the return pump.

I solved this by wrapping my egg crate material in my sump with filter felt so that all the water must pass through it before being returned to the tank(kind of like the "baffle" they are talking about). I change the filter felt about once every 3-4 days, wash and reuse it for several months. Works great as a mechanical filter of detritus, as well!

the returns in my tank (75 gal)are shooting out bubbles. the drain dumps directly into my sump(20 gal long ) aquarium and causes alot of bubbles. my submersible pump has a filter sponge on it but the bubbles are still getting threw.
any suggestions?

Make sure your drain is causing the fewest bubbles possible. Cahnge the position/shape of the outlet until you are satisfied no more can be done to correct the cause of the problem. Then consider putting baffles in your sump. Dwell time will cure the problem. It's just a matter of forcing/allowing the bubbles to surface and break. This is typically done by forcing the water over a series of "over and under" dividers. Do a search on "baffle" or something similar and you will get some ideas. My opinion.
