I'm not sure about any reef stores in Boone. However, if you don't mind travelling 2 hours, you can get to Winston-Salem or Charlotte. I think there may be a/some stores in Asheville, also, but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone from Asheville will post for you.

Let me know if you are willing to travel and I'll make some suggestions in the W-S/Greensboro area. I'm not too familiar with the Charlotte stores.

I would like to know your thoughts on the best Charlotte and W-Salem Stores. I am new to NC in Chapel here. Not much, a store north of Durhum called Triangle Fish- nice people with slight to good selection, and a couple of Raliegh stores- one norht of town on Capitol BLVD that has good selection and even sales and one near the Fair grounds that seems to be expensive for everything.

I even think of opening a store in Chapel Hill- near a new mall- but I have a day job.

Reef magic in Boone...Pricey, not much selection. Owner can be an @$$hole (I've never had a prob. but some have). In Hicory there is one China House (alot of fish...few corals) but a NEAT place to visit shark/groupers (in a "tank" actually is's more like a pool). Some Asian "rare" fish (for display only). A neat place.

yznhmr,
Boone is northeast of Asheville, and nearly due west of Winston-Salem/Greensboro. Your best bet is to head south/east on 321 until you link up with I-40 if you're headed to Phishmon's place [unless he has experience w/421 - I don't]. If you head to Tommy's place - HiTide in Pineville, take 321 through Hickory and on until you pick up I-85 N. Take it to I-485 east Pineville/Matthews. Get off on the 521/South Blvd. exit and head south. HiTide will come up on your left as you head into Pineville. If you head north on 521 you'll run into Fintastic after a few miles. Not too bad a place, and the new store management seems to be improving things thus far.

regards,
rw

For those of you in the NC area that don't know... I have started up a list of people (its an email based listserv) who frag corals for trade. The list is housed at yahoogroups (was listbot but they closed).
The group has members ranging from SC through VA included, but the majority of us live in the Charlotte to Raleigh track. Please email me if you want details!

The (non-functional and not updated web site) is listed below.

Try 'Fins And Critters' located in Shelby, NC (~2 hrs from Boone). Shelby is about 45 min W/NW of Charlotte. Excellent staff, reasonable prices. The salt water fish selection is pretty normal (just the essentials) but the coral selection is as good as any you will find in Charlotte. The owners set up a new coral tank this year. It's a 120 gal aquarium, running 3 10000K 250W HQI's (with actinic) as well as a calc reactor. The tank is always PACKED, with everything from Xenia to SPS. All the corals are healthy and growing (in most cases very quickly!) They usually have a good quantity of live rock in the store. If you are willing to make the drive, it would definately be worth your time to check out this place.
