Does anyone here have one of these fish?
Xanthichthys auromarginatus...I'm trying to find out how big they will get, how they interact with other tank mates. I'm told they are a mild tempered trigger.
Would be going into a 125g FOWLR with Sailfin tang, Koran angel, flame angel, pair of mated Oscellaris clowns, and Longnose Hawkfish.

Can anyone post a picture of the female?

TIA

I am currently in the process of placing one of these fish in my fish-only aggressive setup...all inhabitants are :

4" bluejaw trigger
4" picasso trigger
7" miniatus grouper
5" stars & stripes puffer
5" lunare wrasse
5" christmas wrasse

The tank is a 5-foot 110 gallon.

As far as I know, thbe bluejaw is one of the lesser-aggressive triggers, and gets around 10-12".

You don't want a female...they are not as brightly colored as the male...nowhere near it, in fact.

Peace,

Chip

Thanks for the info.

With the inhabitants I'v listed in my tank, do you think he would be a problem?

I was thinking I would either get the bluejaw or the pink tailed trigger. I can't decide.

Both are docile as far as triggers go, and both are beautifully colored, but may be a problem as they approach full-size. They are, after all, triggers.

Possibly as the years go by he may harass the flame angel, clowns, and hawk, but if you get one around 3" or so to start, you'll have many years of enjoyment before you have to potentially remove the smaller fish.

Best of luck!

Peace,

Chip

The blue jaw is actually a pretty shy fish. I have one in my reeftank and he is one of my favorite inhabitants.

Frank Marini actually has BOTH triggers mentioned. (pinktail and blue jaw) so hopefully he'll chime in on this one.

Thanks Chris and James,
They are both beautiful fish and available at my lfs. I've both of them on hold until Friday when I have to make the decision as to which one to take. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making a major mistake.

I can shuffle the smaller fish into any of my three other tanks when the time comes - hopefully they are slow growers

I like all the triggers, but these two seem to be the species I would have the least problem with.

I decided on the Bluejaw trigger. It's in my tank as we speak, picked it up on Saturday. Has been shy but comes out at night when the actintics are on and also comes out when I feed the tank. Hasn't bothered any of the tanks other fish and they don't bother him. Although the Sailfin did check him out. But as they are both about the same size 3", the match is pretty even.

My LFS actually has a mated pair of bluejaws in right now for a bit over 6 weeks now. So far, they seem to be pretty docile, coexisting with some of the fish you mentioned that are already in your tank, as well as smaller ones such as some of the pygmy angels (multicolor as well as a golden pygmy in the same tank)and smaller wrasses.

BTW, the female looks just like the male but without the blue in the cheeks.
