Hello

I have about a 5" sand bed in my tank. It is all made up of Southdown tropical sand from Home Depot. I always seem to have some sand on my rock structure, no matter how I try to move my powerheads around. Is it okay to leave a light coating of sand on some of the rocks, or will it "catch" detritus and cause algae to grow??

I use a turkey baster to clean off my rock work. You may have to do it a couple times but it works great.

How long have you had the sand bed? Once my bed was established for a couple of weeks the sand storms stopped, and the sand seems "heavier" and less likely to blow around.

Yup, I use a turkey baster just as ScavDog said.
Seems my Gold Banded Maroon Clown likes scattering my Southdown Sand all over the place with her tail.
It's funny to watch but a pain to keep up after.

Good luck.
