Just an idea! By modifying the inlet and outlet hose to accomadate outlet to tank ,inlet from tank ,and inlet from CO2. Place hoses so it will circulate. (inlet hose to outlet). The fiters are already suppose to be water tight.
What kind of problems do you forsee? Most canister have low Gallon per hour ratings.

I tried doing this with a fluval 103 about 4 years ago. It would work for a few days and then get an airlock since the pump head is at the top of the canister filter. I also had to adjust the drip rate on a daily basis. I eventually stopped using it.

My Geo reactor is much nicer looking and is set and forget.

If you could put an extention tube on the intake of the pump, and run it down to an inch off the base of the cannister, you could avoid the airlock.
But then i think the sediment that is normally produced in reactors, would eventually clog the media, since it is a reverse flow that you would have.

If it is money your trying to save, heres a cheapy and quicky that i made about a year ago, with simple water filter cases.

What do you mean nasty looking, seem pretty smart to me !!! This could be worth looking into. I'm in the middle of building a calcium reactor out of pvc pipe, receive my pump yesterday. I will finish the one I started but I really like your Idea.
