I just did. It is much quieter (actually hard to hear at all) but I think the Maxijet 1200 may be too powerful. The skimmer is not producing anything.

Maybe I just have to wait for it to start skimming again or maybe I went with too powerful of a powerhead. I probably should have went with the Maxi Jet 900 that does 230 gallons/hour.

Anyone experienced with this?

I have a MJ 1200 on my Remora on my 29 gallon tank. Other than feeling better about having the MJ Vs. the Rio, I don't know if it is any better. You might raise the collection cup some. I have raised mine fairly high to get a dryer foam. When I upgraded to the MJ, it took about 24 hours for it skim well again. HTH

It is producing foam today. I am happy now. The skimmer is very quiet. I have to strain my ears to hear it as compaired to the obnoxious Rio 600 that came with it.

I rigged up some pvc to create a surface skimmer using the strainer that came with the pump.

I did the same thing three months ago. It was easy and I should have done it sooner. I agree, it is much quieter. As with any changes to the tank/skimmer, some delay in skimate production is possible.

A rio 800 came with my skimmer but I changed it for a mj 1200 I contacted the makers and they told me to use the mj 1200 and I cut the middle out of the prefilter box and it work

Basically I just used some 1/2" PVC and a 1/2" PVC elbow to come out of the pump intake and go as close to the surface of the water as I can get it. You can "rotate" this to get the desired position with the surface of the water. The strainer that comes with the pump fits over the pvc. It is a bit loose but the suction of the water holds it down. You could use 1/2" tubing also.

I am wondering if the RIO 1200 is too powerful for this skimmer. I am not getting much skimmate. The RIO 600 did a better job so far, but I don't want to go back to that noise.

I will be patient and time will tell.

I think the mj1200 may be too powerful for the Remora. It is not skimming very good. I may need to go down to a mj900. I should have done that in the first place but I figured "the more power the better".

I am probably pushing too much water through the skimmer too fast for skimmate to have time to build up.

Hey, I just thought of something. I could buy a ball valve and put it on line. Won't that look pretty.

I wish I wouldn't have bought this thing in the first place.

Anyone want to buy my Remora? I'll throw in the skimmer box for free.

I made the switch to the MJ 1200 and it seems to work fine. I have nothing to compare it to since I switch the pump from the Rio since day 1. Maybe that surface skimmer hook-up you have is drawing in too much air and your not really getting the water flow you think you are...only a thought. When I bought the skimmer the mo company actually recommended the MJ1200 and was selling it for $15.00 if you bought it at the same time. BTW, some days the skimmer foams like crazy...other days I wonder if it is working!

I paid $30 for my surface skimmer box when I bought the remora. The wife shut me off for a couple of weeks when she found out how much I paid for it.

Now it is useless. I don't want to risk breaking it by cutting out the middle. Maybe I can find some other sucker to buy it.

Anyhow, it sounds that you all are running mj1200's with Remoras and not Remora Pros.

I put a prefilter on the end of my "surface skimming PVC" to see if that helps. If it is air, that should slow it down. If it is too much water flow, that might slow it down.

It is skimming, but not as much as it used to.

Maybe it is actually doing a very good job because my water looks great. The surface is nice and shiny as I look up through the tank.

I love how quiet it is without the RIO.

No standard Remora and the company told me I can use the MJ 1200
