Hi All,

finally decided to get an RO/DI unit to replace the TWP. I want to store 30 gallons of water at a time in a rubermaid trashcan with lid. I was told by someone who has a saltwater tank that I'd need to "cure" the trash can somehow by using salt and sticking it in the sun. Is this needed? Or can I simply rinse it well?

Thanks,

-Eric

I have never cured my trashcans before use.... all my critters are doing fine... so you be the judge.

I do rinse them out to remove dirt and debris.

I believe that Craig has posted before that some of the plastics used contain mold release agents and other chemicals... but not any of the rubbermaid cans that I have used I guess...

Cheers
James

you may want to consider the Brute can available at HD and most hardware stores. they are food safe.

That's what I use too. You can get a wheeled dolly that goes under the trashcan, so you can move it around.

I bought the Brute can and lid from Office Depot, HD was out of them. After you put some water into the can it is impossible to move it around, so I bought the dolly the next day.

Now, I make RO/DI water near the sink and easily roll the can to an out of the way spot for storage. Do yourself a favor and get the dolly too.

My $.02.

I got some light blue/gray color trash can with dark blue lid from HD. Just rinsed them before used. I eventually built an acrylic tank and put it in the stand (the place most of you put the sump) to avoid the troubles (with my wife) the splashes produced. Got some cheap acrylic from Regal plastic in Irving Texas (go to their scrap heap).
