Hello,

I am looking for a tank mate for my French Angel, I recently lost the Yellow Tang that was with him. Any suggestions ?? I am looking for something a little different, maybe a butterfly of some kind.

Opinions are welcomed !

Hi Barry,

Here's a photo I took of an adult Gray Angel, cousin to the French:

I'm showing you this to illustrate how big these fish get when they are adults. That fish is MUCH bigger than a dinner-plate.

Fish WILL grow to their adult size. They don't believe the myth that they "grow to fit the tank" I guess...

Or maybe their ears are just full of water so they can't hear.

In either case, you need to be prepared for that fish to outgrow your tank in a big way.

Suitable tank mates would be almost anything, although carribean fish would be preferred. How about a royal gramma?

Cheers

James,
That fish is actually a Grey angel.
French are darker with yellow scalloping on the scales.

Barry,
Is the fish black w/yellow stripes - large black spot on its tail? You have a juvenile French Angel - Pomacanthus paru which will reach an adult size of 30cm - about 15 inches. Previous post was correct - it will grow to its adult size, or, more likely, die before that due to stress from an environment that's too small. If it was an LFS that was the source, they were ignorant of its true identity or irresponsible about inquiring about the size of the buyer's tank. That's not to lay blame at your door. But the right thing to do is to take it back or release it if you can make your way to the Caribbean. - Nice excuse for a great vacation
