Simple question...how much has everyone spent on this hobby? I have a feeling many of you have spent more on your tank than on the car you drive. I've just gotten started on my 60, and I think I've already passed the $1500-2000 mark. Let's see how crazy some of you people are about this hobby. $ amount that's currently in/around your tank, and $ you've spent total.

You want me to post that and run the risk that my wife sees it. You got to be kidding me fool. My wife would go ballistic if she knew how much I spent in 16 months reefing. I could tell you, but then I would have to kill you.

Oh okay I'll edit post.

I've probably spent 8-10k

Why Why do you have to bring up this subject at a supposed to be joyful time of the year. Now I feel REALLY bad.

I really don't want to know, neither do I want to find out. AND, I can assure you that you don't want to know either.

(It's a BIG number, Something close to what bodine has, times 2 in 10 years too.)

I must be more economically inclined than I thought. I would say 8-10 thousand in less than two years. Hmmm......I would never make it in politics.

About the chiller... tell your wife that it is a ancillary heater. It will keep your house warmer during the winter months, and let your gas furnance work less. This special ancillary heater is a heat exchanger that take advantage of the waste heat in your fish tank, and convert it to useful heat for your living room...

let me think......

lighting $110
skimmer $149
rock $200
canopy $ 79
stand $ 99
tank $ 99
livestock$500
misc $100 (heater, powerheads, ect)
additives$100

OMG That's like $1500 bucks and most of my stuff I bought darn near a decade ago when I did fresh water it would cost twice that now.

The key is to not buy from LFS. Mail order everything. It'll save you about a third! LFS will rip you off!!! I bought a brand new 90 gallon all glass with hood and stand. That was the only thing I bought from the store because I wouldn't want to MO a glass tank and it was a steal for 300 bucks. I have top of the line everything and only spent about $2500. I found someone selling 100lbs of live rock for 200 bucks. Bought a brand new aqua-c EC 150 from someone that was practically giving them away. You just have to have patience with shipping and shop around. This hobby doesn't have to be bank breaking.
P.S. The best time to buy is right after x-mas. Especially with the way they claim the economy to be, their should be a great post x-mas sale for us this year. Also keep your eye on the equipment trading section of this board. their are some great deals on there.

I have NO IDEA!!

That's the beauty of using credit cards. You can always hide the bill from your wife !!!

Over $3500 on a 70 reef. If I could buy everything I want for this tank, it would probably cost another $3500.

Yeah that's about right bigtank. I've got at least that invested in a 72g. I'm about to plunk down another $500 for new halides and who know's after that maybe a chiller. BTW, my wife has no idea of the bottom line either. Thank god she doesn't ever read this board.

Thank god most sig others don't read this board!
I'd say around 3-4000 on my 75 fowlr, in slow conversion to reef. Agree with the LFS thing, mine told me a w/d was the only way to go! Wish I'd found the board first, would've dumped more into the skimmer instead of the w/d filtration!
