I've been thinking about upgrading my little 14g biocube to something bigger. The thing is, my house sits over a subway line and although I don't notice it (anymore) the house shakes subtlely - all the time.
I'd like a tank in the 30-40 gallon range, but I'm not a fan of the standard tank dimensions. All of the 'non-standard' sized tanks are rimless nowadays and I'm wondering if the lack of support is just asking for a disaster. - Or is my love for aquariums just asking for a disaster...

Does anyone else have this problem? How often do rimless tanks fail? Has anyone had one crack or shatter? Am I better off with a bigger AIO like the RSM 130D because it has fewer seams?

the subway is next to u or in your backyard or is it subterranean and u feel trembles?

if its a minor tremble, i dont think its a problem

well, if u ever need to mimic minor seismic tremors in your little ocean u wouldnt have a problem!

It's underneath me. My house is over the tunnel right before the subway crosses under the east River, so it's pretty far underground. I don't usually feel it - sometimes it's like a truck passing by, but if I've left some glasses to be washed, I can hear them shake against each other pretty constantly.

I've got a friend in this area who had a tank shatter in her apartment - but that was who knows how many years ago and who knows what else was wrong with it (unlevelled, old, etc..) I'm hoping tank building technology has advanced since then.

Interesting. Maybe thicker glass would do something? Or Acrylic? I would pad under the tank with foam to maybe compensate for the Harlem shake?

Second question, you got a great deal on the house, right? hah

Wow that is a good topic , perhaps some foam or cork boark between the tank and stand can nullify the vibration, when my kids run across the living room I tend to see the vibration through the tanks surface water as well but a train !!!!! Wow that's pretty nuts, I'm trying to figure out where you live lol

- Under my neighborhood after Sandy...

I'm right over the A train on the Brooklyn side of the river.

You think thicker glass would do it, or foam under the tank? I've been more worried about the seams, but maybe I'm thinking about it wrong.

any foam or cork will pack down solid after a while with the weight. i wouldn't worry, like salty said like a pack of kids running through the house will shake more than the subway. just go for it.
