I think that you'll be fine with a clam. Try it on the bottom and you can always move it up higher if you need to. The "foot" or base of the clam gives off an acid that will eat a hole in your rock work (this is good and on purpose.) The clam will eventually make a home for itself in the rock.

What really matters is what kind of bulbs you are using. You said that your PAR is good now so I assume that you switched to bulbs that are within the Par spectrum (6,500K). Actinic bulbs, while nice have no value PAR wise. If you ran 2 GE starcoats (insanely bright bulb which is often too much light!), an 11,000k bulb and an actinic I think that you'd get a nice natural color over your reef plus enough PAR to keep a clam happy.

Make sure that your bulbs and reflector are clean of salt. This goes even more so since your bulbs have one shared reflector.

Well, I would say you have enough light if

1) the clam is not too small-minimum suggestion is 3"+
small clams need more food than light.
2) the clam is close to the light source
3) you did not choose all the wrong light combinations such as all 4 actinics

Real life example:

24" water depth; not crystal clear water, always have micro bubble and food suspended in water(you can do this by enough water flow); with 2 x 65 50/50 and 2 x 65 actinic only (That's 1.18W/gal of white light and 3.54W/gal of blue light at 24" depth); Both Maxima and crocea grow from 3" to 4".

Assuming you choose 2 daylight and 2 actinic, then
you have 48W/29g = 1.66W/gal of white light and 1.66W/gal of blue light at 18". It should be enough. Not necessarily fastest grow you would see but at least sustaining life long term should not be a problem.

dude even though ur water is as u stated that might not be the best thing not knowing ur other par. such as alk, cal and even magnesium. also what are your phosphates at. personally if you want to take my opinion i wouldnt get one as of yet... in the future yes but i would say no at the moment...

learn ur stuff get all ur par. to were they all should be, get enough lighting to make that clam thrive and ur set.. again im not bashing you i would rather see a beautiful living clam thrive rather then get thrown out in the trash...
