i would build your hole around a standard tank like mike said. will be much cheaper. unless you really want a custom size. my tank is 24" deep, and i can barely reach the bottom. you better plan on putting your bathing suit on to do maintenance on 4ft deep.

Couldn't agree more about a 4' tall tank. Forget about just putting on a mask and snorkel, you'll need a full wet suit to reach the bottom. I'd be surprised if you could reach deeper than 28" let alone 48"!!! Even if you could reach 30" straight down, what about reaching to the back side of the tank? That's the hypotenuse of the triangle and considerably farther distance than straight down.

Best of luck with your new build

+1 to what Russ said. Also think about temperature fluctuation..you would need to insulate your garage very very well and/or heat it if your sump and equipment will be in there especially during winter time. That's a recipe for disaster in my opinion. Your best bet is either set up a regular tank inside somewhere with a sump underneath it or if the basement can be kept warm enough to plumb everything down there because underground can have the same type of problem especially if it is a cellar it will be cold.

Yes I def thought about that and think that most of that work I could do my self !
Basically get new in ulster garage door insulate garage add a electric heater with temp controller and possibly 2-3 fire sprinkler heads to be safe !
Also garage is quite sm and a AC added through the brick will keep it cool enough in summer

i would insulate the sump or build a box around sump and insulate the box. run a chiller if needed and put an extra heater in sump. i think this would be way more economical than heating and cooling the whole garage. i wouldn't add sprinkler heads either, I'm assuming their won't be a car in their, that is why its fire rated i would think. imo

Edd r u the one who has a tank set up in his garage similar to set up I'm thinking of?

Yea definitely not economical to heat the whole garage that's why I said what I just said. You can always do something else in the future once you are living there for a while and really have thought about all your options. If you want let me know when you move in officially and I'll bring a bunch of beers and we can brainstorm LOL. Good luck bro.
