LED Configuration

Saltwaterinbrooklyn and pecan2phat would love it if you would post a pic of your tank with the lights and a pic of the light arrangements. In looking at some of the LED sites, I was under the impression that I would need 6 modules for my new 180 upgrade (in slow progress documented via another thread). If I only need 3 or 4, then Im gonna be there as I start up the new tank.
Thanks,
John

and brando i used a custom made corner bracket to get the hight and positioning i wanted .

its cool cause standing in front of my tank it looks like the light floats cause the arm is hidden by the light. im actually making a set for a good friend today , i have made them for a few guys on line and a vendor in north carolina.

So I emailed AI last night to get some info on these 'Phoenix' fixtures so I can get a better idea on if I want to actually make the switch from my Pacific Suns. Only reasons I want to switch really is I like the fact AI is American based and that they are controllable through the Apex. Anyways...I asked a few questions and here is some info that may be useful based on the answers I received.

- I was told that for deeper tanks (24"+), AI recommends the SOL units instead of their new fixtures.
- The new fixtures will ONLY be able to be controlled by their 'Black Box Controller'
- The anticipated cost for their 'Black Box Controller' is $99.95
- They're releasing a new mounting rack that lets you mount the fixture side to side instead of front to back
- They don't have a set release date but I was told it should be some time within the fall season

Hope this was useful to some of you following this thread.

hey reefs , are we talking fall of this year or 2012????? i heard 2012 but if its this year !! hmmmmmmmm

Not 100% sure which 'fall' he meant but he said fall so we'll see if it's THIS fall.

actually reefs4life, that info is not so bad since i really like the current ai leds and they will be cheaper. Like you I want my Apex to control them.

Yeah I really want the control through my Apex but what is throwing me off between the AIs and my current LEDs is the inability AIs have to change color temperature, I'm not too fond of the set color temperature. Maybe if there was something between the SOL White and the SOL Super Blue or even better, a changing color temp fixture would be awesome.

John,
It depends on what type of tank you have. If you are an SPS dominated tank and have growth or want growth for the full dimension of the tank, then 6 modules placed

is the recommended amount.
My 180 is mainly fish but I have hammers and frogspawns so the 4 configuration gives me more then enough light. I can get away with four because I place them

in order to light the length of the tank and not overly concerned with front to back. You can still do this if you raise them higher but the cons are that you will get less intensity/PAR down the height of an 180g and you will also notice light spill from the side panels hence the

HTH and I'll get a pic up in a few days for you.
To reiterate the point, I use 2 modules on a 30"x30"x17" cube because it's is my SPS grow out tank. Some would try to get away with 1 module hung at about 15" but the PAR level would be very low.

Pecan2phat I was reading your other thread, the LED Addiction one, and I was wondering...when you say you have blues and whites at different intensities, does that mean that technically you can change the color temperature on the AIs? If so how do you go about doing that? I'm assuming control through a controller.

Yes,
The AIs are fully controllable where you can set the intensity for each of the colors., So the SOL blue, can control whites, blues and royal blues separately and the SOL white, just whites and blues.
You achieve this through the controller by setting your full photo period in time period groups and stating x% for each color.

like pecan said , totaly adjustable and controllable so no more one button for day and one for night , upgrade to a easier way to do your lighting , its never been cheaper or more fun to sit back and enjoy a good overcast day or lightning storm in your display tanks.

You know what, I know that this might sound strange but get the ai controller. It is well worth the price. Easy to use and sets up the lights perfectly.
