Hi guys, I got a blue hippo tang, not even an inch in size. I got it 4 days ago, and it seems fine...its eating well, and cooperating with everything in the tank. My question is, what is the difference of normal behavior of this blue hippo, and behavior that indicates ich. Also, is there a distinct appearance of the fish that indicates ich?

Hey Jkedra,

Hippo are very shy fishes in my experince. When I first stared the hobby I had mine scare the crap out of me when I first got him. There were a few times where he played dead and even till today he will scatter to his hiding place when ever I get close to the tank, but otherwise when no one is near the tank he's swiming all over the place. As for signs of white ich it's some what obvious sometimes. You will noticed the affected fish rubbing himself agains rocks and or swimming weird as if he's trying to shake something off. You will also notice these white specs on him that I could best describe as salt grains. And you also have black ich which induce similar symptoms but you would notice small black spots on him. I'm attaching a web site that gives you the name of the disease, symptoms and treatments. http://www.saltwater-aquarium-online-guide.com/fish-diseases-and-treatments.html.
Good luck.

You can minimize the risk of ich through diet.
I noticed any sudden movements scares mine also but if I approach the tank a little slower then the fish is fine.

Haha no I didn't lose actually.....my hippo didn't get ich. I posted this thread as a precaution only. Also, When feeding, I mix mysis shrimp, and dissolve a tablet of fresh garlic supplement (like the ones you can get from gnc). Once it dissolves in the cup, along with the shrimp, and I smell a light garlic odor...I just then dump it in.
