Hey all..
Was thinking about purchasing Selcon for my clownfish.. is that a good idea (pretty much for any fish?)
Is Selcon good for coral as well (palys, zoas, various mushrooms, elegance)?
This is for a 6g Nanocube.
I've been feeding frozen bloodworms so far, I feel I should vary the diet what other good foods are out there, which can be dipped in selcon?
Secon contains vitamins and HUFAs -- Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids -- that're needed by, well, pretty much everything. Everything loves selcon.
As for other foods, I use cyclop-eeze as my main coral and small planktivorous fish food. I don't think bloodworms are a good food for marine life in general, because they're an insect larva, not a marine worm. Whenever possible, you want to use foods from marine sources. However, adding selcon to the mix does go a long way towards rectifying their nutritional shortfalls.
Also, if the coral polyps are large enough, sometimes I'll just feed it Formula 1 pellets, the small ones, when I'm feeling lazy. This includes my BTA and large euphyllias.
There're three core foods you'll probably want: frozen mysid shrimp of -marine- origin (PE Mysis and many other brands are freshwater, other brands are saltwater, though it's a good idea to have a pack of PE mysis around if you plan on having picky fish, since a lot of stores use this as their staple food, and you may need it while you're weaning them onto something better,) cyclop-eez, and oyster eggs. These three foods will cover 95% of coral and fish feeding situations, unless you've got larger fish or those which require algae. As I mentioned before, Formula 1 pellets are great when you're lazy, as is Formula 1 flake.
