There are many factors that make acclimation important the depth from where the animals came. Salinty, lighting,ph,temprature, nitrate etc.should be considered.I acclimate for a 1/2 hour to 1 hour depending on the condition and the overall difficulty of the fishes survival rate.

Acclimation wholly depends on where you bought the fish and the conditions of the system you bought from (Salinity, Temp) as well as how long the animal sits in the bag (travel time) and what kind of animal it is (size oxegyn absorption, excretion -more ammonia etc) , whether it has o2 in the bag is also a contributing factor.

Bottom line - you should acclimate for whatever the conditions warrant - key is to know those conditions.

Man!!! Rick do you know how upset I am with acclimating. Obviously not. Let me explain
I recently made a purchase that came from Florida. 13 fishes, 2 shrimps and 1000 pods. Now here is where I am peeved before I removed the tape on the box, Just by weight I was dissapointed. The box had to weigh less than 4 pounds.
Each fish was bagged with about 4-5 ounces of water or less. I won't even get into how cruel that is, but how do you acclimate with that amount of water.
Well I temp acclimated which must have been all but 5 minutes for the small bags and I checked salinity which was 1 point off, now the ph was way off (higher in the tank) and I didn't even bother to check for ammonia in such a small bag. But I had to use four lines to do Rescue 911 and drip and stop and drip and stop for about 2 hours. 3 were dead on arrival. and 4 were listless, revived 2.

I have seen them ship Bettas in plastic bags with barely a oz. of water i know they are air breathers but i think that cruel and not all survive the trip. They stuff them all in one box, less wight more fish and less money on shipping and packing for them.
