Does anyone do any kind of prophylactic treatment while their fish are in quarantine? I know some people do FW and/or formalin dips, though I've noticed they are controversial. What about medications - antibacterial or antifungal. I treat my FW fish while they are in quarantine based on the recommendations of someone who worked in fish research but at the time I didn't have SW so never asked him.

IMO no treatments should be used on a fish that has shown no signs of being ill. Both FW dips and formalin dips (you know what that stuff is made of?..I'm sure you do Eric...) will likely cause stress in a healthy fish and may well exacerbate an existing illness in an unhealthy fish.
The point of QTing is to provide the fish with a comfortable, safe haven to regain it's energies after its journey to you through a healthful diet and pristine water conditions while observing the fish for any possible health issues.

Agreed,I like the holistic approach with just good environent and food. A few of my fish came came scratching and other symptoms and all I did was feed my normal garlic and selcon soaked food and they recovered. Not a pro but this method has worked for me with a few fish and illnesses/injuries. Some people just overreact and end up killing things by treating to much.A good immune system is an amazing thing.

Agreed.. I get my WF on.... And just slam everything,,, maybe temp acclimate... 10+years of slamming now.. But you got to make sure you water pars are great.

The reason I ask is that oftentimes an animal - be it fish, shrimp, coral or human - can be carrying a parasite load that is not high enough to cause symptoms or disease in it, or the animal just reached an equilibrium with it - and thus you wont see any problems even with 4 weeks of quarantine. Then you introduce that fish, for instance, into your DT and expose your other fish to a parasite to which they have not been exposed and then they can develop a disease and possibly die.

Yeah, formalin dips are/have been popular with many for treating incoming fish. I dont personally do them. I am very confused with this topic as I can see good reasons for doing prophylactic treatment and against it and after losing another fish in quarantine I'm starting to lean towards prophylaxis ( not necessarily formalin though ).
