As some of you know I've been sick for the last few months. Just before I went in for surgery in early December I saw ich on my angel and Kole. Since I was too weak to remove the fish. I looked for another way of treating. In my 120 I have around $ 175.00 invested in fish and $450.00 in corals so I didn't want to use any chemical treatments in the tank. I think the ich came into the tank if this is possible on some Zoas I purchased from another member.

What I decided to do was to use my diatom filter. I've been using it for 40 days changing the media every 3. After 3 weeks all signs of ich on the infected fish have disappeared and I also noticed that the sick fish were not using the services of my skunk Shrimp as often. I will be stopping the diatom filter in 2 more weeks and report back on any recurrence. If this proves to be a method that holds up to time I think its an inadvasive method of treatment that others may want to try. I also began adding Kent Garlic and Selcon to the feedings.I purchased the filter from F&S for $80 and the media from a pool store, it is 1950 engineering and a pain to get used to but it works.

I have read that diatom filter works by filtering out the ich in the water column. Question is how expensive is to replace the media that frequent?
I am interested in getting one just incase. Glad it worked for you.

I am on my fourth diatom filter in almost 40 years. I would not be able to keep a reef without one. I use it to stir up my gravel a few times a year. (I don't have a DSB)
I clean my rock with it and sometimes use it on NSW. It will remove free swimming ich, although it will not cure the disease but it can be used to eliminate ich from water.

IIRC the DE media from pool supply stores is not the same quality as what is marketed for the aquarium industry, and is not suggested for use in the diatom filter.
Off the top of my head I cannot recall what the difference is but will contact a ffriend who may remember.

If anyone hear has heard this and knows, please chime in.
I do know it isn't so that we can pay more at a LFS for the media....

Good to hear you are feeling better Brian!
