I was given a set of larger Maroon Clowns. The Female died with popeye. So i was left with the male. Someone just gave me a smaller maroon that i put into the thank, has been in there for about a week now. They paired up basically immediately. This morning they were doing a lot of rubbing on each other? For a couple mins straight. Did not look vicious at all..

Thanks
Anthony

don't most fish spawn by female lay eggs and then male spray eggs? I don't think he's fertilizing eggs inside her - as far as i know, fish don't do that.

but of course, i could be wrong. I know that is not the way FW angels behave, but i don't know spawning behavior of maroon clowns specifically.

I would imagine they are getting to know each other - there are many species where courting behavior includes a circle-dance where the two are in light contact and go round in circles. I'd bet that's what's going on.

Regardless, it's most likely good.

best of luck!!!!

They def lay the eggs outside and then they are fertalized. But i was just asking if the rubbing and stuff is like a mating ritual or something like that.. I have read that the male swims vertical in front of the female and shudders and stuff like that. Not sure if what mine did is similar.

it is animal behavior, and close contact is for only a few reasons

1. pre-mating ritual
2. lek behavior - i.e. establish pecking order -- but this does not happen for fish that pair up like clowns, or probably also not for animals of opposite sex. two males will do that to establish who is stronger (they push against one another - sharks do this), who is braver. but this is a male and a female?

so my money is on pre-mating ritual behavior.

IMO, that's not mating behavior. If I am correct, the smaller one is more active in this ritual. It's just plain sign of subordination from the smaller one which is now for sure a juvenile or male. The bigger male is soon going to transform into a female. Only then you can expect mating. I have seen this behavior with my maroon clown pair, and they still haven't spawned yet. Sorry to disappoint you. But given time, they will do what you want them to : )
