I have a new flame angel in QT for 2 weeks. It is very active and eating well. However 3 days ago, I noticed some tear in its tail that seems to get worse now. Attached is a photo of its tail. Is this fin rot? Should I do anything about it? I checked the parameters and they look fine.

Please help, thanks.

There is no other fish in the QT. We feed Spectrum pellets, some flake foods and seaweed (Nori). There is also a small LR that the flame angel pecks on.

In the absence of other fish, (ruling out tankmate aggression) and the time that you've had it (2 weeks, ruling out net damage from capture at the pet store) I think you are actually looking at "fin rot" - which is rarely seen unless there was one of the predisposing factors that I mentioned above.

So what to do? Treatment of the water with a broad spectrum antibiotic effective against gram negative bacteria would be one option (other than tetracyclines). Of course, there would likely be some impact on the tank's biological filtration system. You could try neomycin sulfate at 250 mg per gallon every day for five days. Without a sensitivity study, its all pretty much a guess.
