Hi
I have just got to the stage where I am stocking my +-350 G home made tank with livestock, slowly. I had recently put a small wrass in and came across a juvanile remora whilst spearfishing the other day. Took him home to see if he would adapt to the tank just to give the wrass some company. I realise that they are probably not likely to surface in a LFS environment, but wanted to share my interesting experience with the forum in case anyone ever stumble across one....
After a few days where the specimen refused to eat and basically just stuck on to the rear glass and didnt move, I was determined to return him to the ocean and call the experiment a total failure (well- not total, he was still alive!) when lo and behold- he started to eat! (Last weekend, oh he is about 3" long.)
Since then this fish has become the star attraction to all my tank owning friends, he has more character than anything any of them have seen. He swims using his pectoral fins and hovers more than swims. When feeding, he lies flat on the sand facing up current and looks up, darting upwards to feed as food floats by in the current before settling back down on the sand to await the next morsel. For character you just cannot beat this species. His colouring is pretty bland, black with a white stripe, but his tail makes up for it, the tail expands when he uses it to reveal a large 'eye' pattern, possibly to deter potential predators I think.(?)
I will keep him a bit longer and see how he fares, but for now he has been an interesting and very entertaining addition to my tank and I would highly reccomend the species to anyone who comes across one.
