I'm going to set up a 90g. cube tank and I'd like it to feature c.jordani. How many would be recommended, m/f mix and what other native Tongan fish would you recommend as tankmates? Thx-Jim
Thanks Matt, I think Anthias would be too similar to the flame wrasses in shape but a pair of swallowtails would be nice. And we have both red and green x-mas so that sounds good too.
C. jordani is a native Hawaiian fish, not Tongan. I just received a "harem" from http://www.twilightaquatics.net that are absolutely perfect. Other Hawaiian fishes (none of these are endemic like the flame wrasse) you might consider: a true Hawaiian flame angel (much more red than Marshall/Christmas Is. flames), Potter's angel (endemic), chevron tang, bicolor anthias, Vanderbilt's chromis. Hope this helps.
Thanks John, we do actually get the flame wrasse here and also flame angels (rarely). I see a lot more kole tangs than chevrons so I was thinking along those lines.-Jim
Tangs and Surgeons will grow fast and become large, and then I recommend you to pick them up from the tank of fairy wrasses.
Yes, Hawaiin Flame Angels are said to have a deep red body but the famous diver John Hoover of Oafu told me that all the specimens are deeply red; such ones are not common in Hawaii and most are similar to those from other localities. In Japan red forms will be sold at a very high price as a Hawaiian specimen but some of those actually are from Christmas Island, the Line Islands.
Here is a male Cirrhilabrus jordani, 10cm from Hawaii.

Defintely get at least a pair. The courting rituals of Cirrhilabrus are awesome. I've been watching my two species sex up my tank for weeks now and it never gets old
We also have a calloplesiops argus (fine spotted betta) . I think this would make a good tankmate but do the c. jordani get aggressive in tanks? How about the scottorums?
