A friend found this picture while surfing one of the forums a long time ago. It interested him so much he saved it. We were recently discussing how I would like to get a pair of mandarins, but would like something more rare. He sent over this pic.

I know its a dragonet, but I would like to know the exact name.

If you find out what this is and it is aquarium able, please let me know. That is a magnificent animal. Looks to be in the finger dragonet family perhaps.

Hmmm, maybe Synchiropus moyeri?

I searched through all 56 Synchiropus spp. at fishbase.org but hardly any have pictures! Good luck finding one for sale. 8O

I appreciate you taking the time to look into it Matt.

I posted on another forum, and everyone on that site has assumed the picture is photoshoped.

I actually did a google search earlier on the filename of the pic,and much to my suprise I found a website with the exact picture above on it.

Yes, the URL is from Rainbowed Sea Tours. Chris Newbert is a pretty good friend of mine. I suspect if you emailed him, he would id it for you. On the other hand, I KNOW he would not be pleased if that image is on the WWW in other than his website. He is a professional photographer and takes his intellectual property rights very seriously.

If you knew that why didn't you speak up earlier when you posted? I didn't find the website until later today.

I'd like to find an ID just to prove the "your an idiot it's photpshoped" posters on the other forum.

As far as intellectual property rights. If you type dragonet into a google image search it is the second picture that comes up.

Hmmm. Well I did not know it was Chris's image until the URL was posted. The fact that google brings up an image does not mean it can be posted on a web page, it merely means that google can find it on his web page. Thanks for the identification, your identification seems to be right. In any case, my posting was not intended to start a flame war; I will go back where I came from and will not post again. Life is simply too short for that.

LOL...I didn't mean to come across like that.

I'm not the type to get upset over a fish picture on the internet. I was just a little amazed how many people on the other forum basically said "your an idiot look at the picture it's photoshoped". Where on this forum people seemed more interested, and actually wanted to try to ID it.

I guess it's too late for me to do anything about it being posted here, and other forums? I figured the fact that the pic was on several pages of the google image search as well as on some forum that my friend originally found it on made it ok for me to post it. I don't think I would put pictures on the net I didn't want others to use without a watermark or something, but I guess that's a topic for another discussion.

No problem, I am a bit sensitive to flame wars. I think the pictures you are posting as identification MAY be two different animals. The last one is a finger dragonet which I do not think is the same animal as the first wonderful picture you posted. By the way, I KNOW it is not "photoshoped" and it may actually have been taken on a trip with me to the Solomon Islands. And, by the way, I hold the copyright rights to this image so I KNOW it can be posted. :D
