Here is a picture of my true Bodianus opecularis. I can't tell you what part of the world it came from, although according to Scott Michael it is an Indian Ocean species. Acts like the more "common" one fron the Pacific.

Very cool fishie! Although I am a bit more partial to the (very common) Bodianus pulchellus. :D

Anyone ever see the Bodainus sanguineus at the Waikiki Aquarium? Now THAT is a cool hogfish. The colors are insane!

Vili, did you mean you have two opercularis? Or sanguineus? Would love to see pics of either! :D

I think sanguineus is endemic to HI.

Funny, we can only dream of Mauritius shipments here in the US. Got a contact? My opercularis is a "recycled" fish by the way - got him from another hobbyist who had him for awhile.

What do you mean by "dream of Mauritius shipments"?
I bet you do get Mauritius shipments.
How do you guys get the gem tangs?
I saw people in the states are paying 1000$ for them and they are waitng lists.

Vili_shark-

I meant nothing sarcastic there. I "dream" of more regular shipments from that part of the world. Gems are very few and far between in the US as are shipments from Mauritius. Others can correct me if I am wrong, but maybe only a few show up per year (Gems that is) - hence the waiting lists and high price. While I personally could care less about Gems, I would love to obtain a Centropyge debelius and a group of Mauritius clowns - probably will need to spend the same money on a new car first though
I don't know of anyone who is able to directly or regularly import from Mauritius. I would guess that it is a little easier logistically to get stuff from Mauritius to Israel than from Mauritis to the US, while similarly, from Hawaii to the US mainland is easier than Hawaii to Israel.
BTW, I have seen one Bodianus sanguineus for sale in person ($1800 at Old Town Aquarium in Chicago - www.oldtownaquarium.com). It is even more spectacular than the pictures can convey. www.justrarefish.com has some pictures of one in their "gallery". Rumor has it that the diver in Hawaii who was using a rebreather to get some of the deeper water stuff gave it up. That's only a 3rd hand rumor though.

Hi John
Im getting most of my fish in Hong Kong.
I just cant see why people pay 1000$ for a fish that costs about half in Germany, and Germany is expensive place to buy fish!

Bodianus sanguineus for 1800$....well thats probably the lowest it'll get unless you can buy it direct from Hawaii, never seen this fish so I cant compare....I wish I'll have the chance to buy a specimen one day.

Take care

Villi_Shark-

Just found this website listed on another board. Though it is still a work in progress, seems like if anyone can get you a B. sanguinesis hog then these guys can.

I for one have always wanted a "Dr. Seuss" fish (Belonoperca pylei) ever since I saw a picture in The MOdern Reef Aquarium vol 4.
