Im new to this hobby as compared to most of the folks in this comunity. I have tried to learn alot by asking alot of stupid questions, and your usuall research on the net. as much as the great appeal to have a disease free environment, the lure of a nice colorful comunity of fish was more for me to resist. I DO NOT USE A Q TANK. needless to say Iam not advising anyone to do the same, but you know who you are....it's the old "I dont have space for it", or the " who has time to set up one anyway? " this is my choice & here is a list of fish that showed ich & has fought it naturally by eating well. my post is merely to help someone to select the livestock

Anthias:
Lyretails
tried:
Bartletts

Angel:
Blue Face
Swallow Tail (male)
Flame
tried:
scribble
Potters

Damsels:
Green Chromis
Pink Clown (no host anemone)
tried:
Vanderbilts

Gobby:
Rainfordis
Purple FireFish (white body)
tried:
regular Firefish
Gudgeon

Wrasse:
Yellow Streak
Long Fin
Tono
SixLine
Mystery (jumper)
tried:(this where it get devastating)
Lineatus (adult & juvi)
Scotts (australia & Cooks Island)

Tang:
Kole (adult)
Naso Blonde (never ate well)
tried:
Moorish Idol (bad idea)
Kole(juvi)

Misc:
Hawkfish

I do use a UV light on 24/7, feed Thera A+ pellets & flakes, frozen Cyclops & Nori (green & red) soaked in garlic.
My tank has been up for about 8 months

BTW tried=dead from ich otherwise noted due to jumping. I may have forgotten some stuff, & will try to updat my list of ich hardy fish. I hope some people who have similar situation can ring in so to keep the list better. again, using a QT has alot of merits, just wasnt my choice

It's hard in NY apartments. I barely have room for one tank, let alone two. I have a separate tank for QT, and I got it after I bought a fish from Petco (no judging - you would have bought that pylei wrasse for 20 bucks too) and didn't have a QT system for it. As a result, my entire tank got ich, and I subsequently lost my beautiful wrasse as well as a couple of chromis.

I have the room and the tanks, but I use a 5 gallon bucket to treat a fish only when it is covered in ich.

Most fish I buy will not do well in QT, they need the live rock and "normal" tank conditions to acclimate and thrive.

Dex, I thought your "tried" list is longer than that:lol2: Got your VM, guess there is no need to call you back:).

I have a Fairy Wrasses dominated reef tank in my apartment. Dollar per size, wrasses are quite expensive... After losing a few expensive wrasses during QT, I don't QT my wrasses anymore. Wrasses don't travel well and QT stress them even more. Thank god they are hardy once they get used to their new home and are quite ich resistance.

I think your lost of Lineatus (adult & juvi) and Scotts (australia & Cooks Island) are primary stress related and ich secondary.

To somewhat "protect" my fishes, I do run a Emperor UV with properly adjusted GPH 24hr/day.

QT serves 2 purposes and you are addressing only one. Yes QT for a new fish can make it easier to save in case it is sick since you can medicate in QT. If you medicate in your display you may destroy it. It may kill your bacteria, critters that can not handle it etc.
But the main point is you do not want to infect what you already have in your display tank. That is the major risk.
