My Favorite fish in my tank!
Very hard to get a healthy specimen not damaged by the collection/shipping/holding process- these fish are fragile and many perish from one or both if not done correctly.
( I got this beauty from Michael at NY aquatics)
Now lets say you get a healthy one.....Mine was eating and robust when I received it BUT...It still hid under the sand for almost a week before coming out to see his new home.
Sand- you will need to have at least 2.5-3 inches(more is better than less), for the fish to sleep under.
When he emerged he was emaciated and had stopped eating prepared food.
Luckily my tank is loaded with bugs Cause, i really didn't have anything in it to eat them so- The wrasse fattened up on those for a few days.
Thank god for pods, if not for the over abundance the fish would have perished. After gaining back his strength he began eating large frozen Mysis, soaked in Selcon and Garlic.
Now He eats like a pig BUT- only live pods, the vitamin soaked Mysis and just recently some Nori (he does pick at algae on the power heads etc.).
It most also be noted that these fish have also been known to mysteriously die after about 6 months in the tank....(I have not had mine long enough to find out). This may or may not also be attributed to collection/shipping/holding techniques?
These fish are not for the inexperienced however, if you feel you can get a healthy specimen, provide the right environment (sand and plenty of crevices w/pods to poke around for), Plus get it to eat prepared foods,
then there is no reason to not try one!
Mine has turned into a little puppy and follows me around the tank begging for mysis!! He even eats from the tip of my turkey baster -watch out for those teeth!!!
Good Luck
