same fish, different lighting and with tail and fins extended.

Does anyone know what kind of wrasse this is?

This is almost a shot in the dark but judging from the tail spot (or ocellus) it's a juvenile of the species and if I had to narrow it down more I would say it looks a lot like it has some color and pattern from a Lineatus Wrasse. It could be a juvenile (looks small in the pics besides the spot) or maybe even a hybrid. Where did you get it from and where did they get it from? Origin might help narrow it down.

We sort of thought the same thing. It came from Petco at Union Square so where they got it is a mystery. We asked if they knew what kind it was and they responded "assorted"

If it a a Lineatus... jackpot!

I was wary buying a fish from PetCo, but I watched him for a while - no white spot, was actively swimming around and seemed to be looking for food. He's doing absolutely fine in my tank - not lethargic at all, swimming around, eating all kinds of foods. All of the other fish in the tanks looked fine as well. So, I figured I would take a chance because he looked so pretty.

My tank is completely covered - no worries about jumping!

I paid $20.00. :)

lineatus or not, you got a great deal. i go to the petco in union sq every once in a while. sometimes you get great deals on fish but the downside is that most of them are very sick. if you have a qt system then you have nothing to worry about. adding sick fish to your tank can lead to a catastrophy. be very careful

good luck w/ the fishy.

Bump for heurefan. Any thoughts Steven? RD

Nice find, apparently its a rare fish per the wrasse experts. Randy is correct, it is in fact C. Pylei a variation from Cebu. I've seen 2 of these Cebu Pylei, one at Reef and Fin in CT, and one that is currently available at Absolutely Fish in NJ.

Here's a link to more info on fairy wrasses,

Scroll down to Fig.17 for picture of your fish :)

See if you can get a picture of it flashing!

Best of luck with the wrasse!

Do they actually flash colors like the flasher wrasses, or do they just extend all of their fins up? I've seen him do that a bunch of times - seems to be a sign for "get away from me I'm eating". He also does it to his (her?) reflection a lot - I assume because s/he thinks it's another fish there of the same type.
