Just wondering if anyone can give me an idea of some fish that will not end up killing others of their kind. I'm considering doing a species tank where I would have 5-6 of the same fish, rather than an assortment like most reef tanks.

I thought cardinals might be good for this, but would love to hear a few other ideas for my 40g breeder.

Cardinals will kill each other if not paired. A few anthias with a male would work

Actually, most cardinals are quite tolerant of conspecifics, Bangaii cardinals are not, but most of the commonly encountered ones are, such as pj's, flames, parvulus, orange stripe, seagrass, blue eyes, and fivelines.

Clown gobies pair off, but their territories are so small you could have a few pairs in a 40.

I am a big fan of barnacle blennies, they are very social and small.

Trimma gobies are also small and social.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I think I may stick with a PJ cardinal tank, though clown gobies could be cool too
