physically there is no way to tell just by looking. Depending on the species of clown as trini said most times a clownfish over 2 inches is female.

If you have a clownfish that has been alone for a long period of time usually they will become female.

Buy the smallest clown to pair with that fish

Cool thanks. I'm in the process of looking for a nice designer clown to pair mine up with. Just gonna take a while until the wife see's one she likes

There's no way to determine this. Read-up on sexing/breeding clownfish. They have a hierarchy that is determined among themselves. The largest clown will become the female usually.

How big is the clown now? The new clown you add should be SMALLER than the current one.

Do you want to pair your clown up with a designer to breed them? Very few would actually look like the designer clown in that case.

Cool... getting a smaller one will make sure they don't fight. Once a clown changes to female, it won't change back. If you have 2 large ones there's a chance they both could be females from a previous grouping and would fight to be at the top of the hierarchy.

Hierarchy is as follows:
-largest one is the breeding female
-2nd largest is the breeding male
-the rest are all smaller males

If the female was to die, the breeding male becomes female and the largest non-breeding male now becomes the breeding male.
