Ok so I want a bigger fish, say a tang, or dwarf angel, or somthing else. Just somthing slightly larger and a different body shape then say clowns or wrasses. What are my options. I have plenty of swimming room in my 50, and it currently houses 2 small clowns, a 2" yellow coris, and 1" royal gramma.

I wouldn't put a tang in a 50g tank, but that's just my opinion. You could probably get away with a Dwarf angel unless you plan on keeping corals. The larger wrasses, angels and tangs all need more swimming room.

I see the feasible options as 1) get a bigger tank or 2) find one of the miriad of other species that will definitely fit in a 50gal without issues.

Koles and mimics still get too large for a 50, I would say 75 as the absolute minimum to start them, but they would have to be rehomed eventually anyway.

I know your looking for something larger but... I'd suggest a scooter blenny. Just because of the way they float from rock to rock and fly around the tank. A flame angel or coral beauty would be another safe addition. Larger fish dirty the tank quicker and not to mention knock stuff over. You could house a yellow tang (a very young one) or kole tang but you need to give them up eventually. they may not be much to look at but the smaller the species the better.

Well the funny thing is....I upgraded yesterday to the 50! (Only from a 40 but, now I have a sump). Believe me I don't want to stress any fish, and I realize that at some point the fish will need a new home, but with members on here I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. I will have to look into the tomini as I've never heard of them. Scooter blenny does sound good as well as I would like a fish that hovers the rock and perches himself in interesting spots. Keep the ideas and opinions coming please. Also let me reiterate even tho it is a 50 there is plenty of swimming room

In! I got a 50 gallon too and I'm looking for a bigger fish. I was thinking about a yellow or hippo tang. My rockscaping is designed so there is a lot of swimming area all around so I'll be watching this thread

dwarf angel. there are some pretty reef safe ones. also i wouldn't get a tang but the smallest ones are the bristletooth tangs. there are some butterfly fish that can be kept in smaller tanks too
