I am at a loss on what to do - I have a 90 gal reef and 70 gal sump. My fish are a coral beauty, 2 perculas, nice size yellow tang and a yellowtail damsel. These fish are all over 3 years in my tank. I spotted a nice g.f. angel that I would like to put in but have reservations bec of the coral beauty. Please make a fish suggestion if you don't like the g.f. angel. I don't want a wrasse bec my tank is uncovered. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Just because it eats at the shop does not mean after being bagged, stressed out, moved, acclimated, and enter a new tank with whatever your pars are at that it will still eat. Or even one day just stop eating. Nice fish, but a big bill to waste if the unexpected happens...jmo

Three things come to mind right away when dealing with GF angels. First, finding a healthy specimen and as with difficult species I prefer them about 3". Reason here is the larger the more difficult to adapt and if too small it's a challenge with the amount of feedings they required. Second, quarantine--a must. The reason is to treat possible internal parasites which they are highly susceptible to and it's easier to train them to eat prepared food well without competition. Third, social acclimation in which I usually use a container and monitor how other fishes react to the new addition for a minimum of 5 days. If there's any aggressive fish in the DT GFs don't do well and may stop eating. But once acclimated they will hold their own.

Given that the one in question is about 4" (saw this info on the other board) and you have a good size yellow tang the chance of aggression from your tang upon intro is very high so I would definitely social acclimate as mentioned above. The good thing is that the GF is going into a reef where generally water parameters are better than fowlr.

Best of luck if you decide to get it and post some pics afterward.

Thanks for the replies. Flameangel, you have made some good points. The QT is the perfect place for the fish to eat w/o normal tank competition. I'm still undecided, it's a question of what coral I have and what the fish will do.

They nip less than others most of the time but besides the large yellow tang being in a small tank adding the gold flake to a tank that's below the recommended size is too much of a gamble in my book. Especially when you consider the higher probablity of aggression from the yellow tang due to the close quarters, socially acclimated or not.

I agree totally that the risk is high when dealing with additions below recommended tank size but I feel it can be done if acclimated correctly. Many have said we cannot have multiple angels in a tank, genicanthus is reef safe yet we heard from reefers the ones they added nip and have a taste for them. All I'm trying to say is every fish, setup is different and the outcome may differ from others and we will never know until we try. I'm not here to encourge others to do it but rather inform them the procedures that have helped me.

Here's my 75g while I was still living in Queens prior to moving to NJ. The flame angels was added last and the GF was just before them. Please excuse the thirty glass.
