I saw one if these at a lfs the guy had it setup, the white to blue ratio makes this light belong on a freshwater tank.

To be honest when I saw it in use. I laughed and so did the lfs owner.

Looked at them for a short time, wasn't impressed. Nowhere near enough output coming from those units. You can get a lot more powerful LED setup for that price.

Ended up going with a MaxSpect unit instead, and have been totally happy.

AF has had this and set up too. did not like it. not enough blue mixed. would be real nice on a cichlid tank or something, not reef. makes the tank kind of look deep water almost. if you have been to manhattan aquariums, picture there real nice cichlid tank. looked kind of like that...

I have seen them in use, and I wouldn't go for it. It looks like you need 2 of them instead of the 1. It's missing something and doesn't do the tank justice.

I wouldn't use it for sps but as a soft coral light its more than enough. as for brightness it is very bright just below and 3" before and after the fixture. I have it on a 45 cube. As for color, I would put it at a 10k white. not awe inspiring but adequate.

Bottom line it depends on your use, and budget.

Just curious but everyone knows there are 2 different ones right? The Reef LED and the regular LED they make.

I have one of both. The unit I just described is the reef led unit. I will try to photograph both but the camera compensates a bit for the low light of the regular unit. I assure you that the reef led is a bright unit, but once again I have not used it for SPS.

Chief,

The only difference between the reef one and the regular is color bulbs - they come in varied lengths and the color is closer to 11-12k in my estimation - my preference is 14k, but other things drive these choices like cost, efficiency and functionality/usability.

I saw them (a set or 2) over a ML 25g tank at our national show in Orlando and it was crazy bright. They had all sorts of corals and fish in it.

Only set back is that the legs they provide put the fixture about 3" or so above the water. Heat will be an issue with this unit unless mounted up into a canopy.

Chief,
I borrowed this from another site, but it pretty much states a good point:

"We all came from MHs or fluorescents. Early on, we were totally unprepared for the switch to LEDs. The fact that LEDs don't appear as bright to the human eye as MH/T5, coupled with the lack of radiant energy (they don't "feel" hot) add in the lesser electrical demand generating almost ideal PAR output, the efficiency of the optics utilized, further compounded by the lack of PAR meters...all combine to create a perfect scenario for the destruction of a lot of livestock... Early on almost everyone blasted their tank with far too much PAR - We just didn't understand how powerful these tiny emitters were."

This was taken from another website and written by someone else, however it puts into perspective the LED craze. please note this is reference to the AI module which has only 24 leds, yet has more par than some MH.
I posted this to inform, that its not about the brightness but rather the par and the capability of the unit to perform its function. BTW I give this opinion as someone who owns a unit which is on a marineland 45 gallon cube.
