Reef Octopus NWB-110

Hey MR,

I currently have a 55 gallon tank that I am upgrading to a 75 gallon picking it up on Friday.

I currently am running the Reef Octopus bh-100 HOB skimmer on my DT right now, and when I get this new tank set up I have a 20 long sump I'm going to use so I am looking for an in-sump skimmer.

I saw this one online - for about $125 shipped. Wondering if it will be sufficient for my tank? If not, please recommend a good skimmer but I am on a really tight budget.

Or if I can raise the sump up a little, do you think I can just hang the skimmer I currently have on the back of the sump instead? I may need to extend the pump down depending on where my water level sits, but that would save me $ from buying a new skimmer.

if your getting a 75Gallon tank you should upgrade your skimmer, i dont think you need to but your skimmer is rated for up to 75gallons. so im pretty sure you have 105 gallons total with a 30G sump if not bigger.

That's true. I just realized that. I would be using a 20 long as a sump. So I'm not sure the exact gallons it would be with LR, sump obviously not filled all the way either so I would assume around 80 gallons of actual water + all the LR and sand I have too.

Wish your skimmer that you were selling was an in-sump lol.

Unless you are planning a *very* heavy bioload, that skimmer will be fine in a 75g. Size your skimmer for your display tank...between displacement by rocks/sand etc and the fact that you never fill your sump, it's a wash and using the display gallonage as a measure to size a skimmer is the way to go. If you plan on plumbing in a frag tank or something, that could change things, but only if it's a very big frag tank.

I have a Reef Octopus NWB-110 now in my 120g. I had been using it in my 55g. It's kicking butt in my 120g now which is moderately stocked - I feed 2-3 times a day and have over a dozen fish and a pile of SPS. I have to clean it every 3 days or so. It's pulling out a thick, brownish black sludge that smells horrendous.

In my case, I'll likely be upgrading soon as I have way more water volume than you and plan on adding even more bioload. I also have 1/3rd of my sump partitioned as a frag grow out tank, so there's that.

But as I said, in your case, I think that's an excellent skimmer choice.
