Hey Reefers! Let's talk Discosoma Mushrooms!
Discosoma Mushrooms or "Discos" as they are usually referred to as, are a grouping of brightly colored Soft Corals, that are widely popular throughout our hobby! They differ from other Mushrooms such as Rhodactis and Ricordea, as they are usually smooth, and perfectly circular. Like vibrant disco balls!
PLOT TWIST! Did you know Mushrooms, including Discos, aren't even corals at all? They are actually called Corallimorphs! Which are an order of coral-like sea anemones that are closely related to stony corals! We rope them into the soft coral category as they don't have skeletons, are non-aggressive, and have extremely similar care standards. Even if they aren't technically corals, we don't mind, we still treat them as such!
Discos are renowned for their bright colorations and crazy patterns! You can find a Disco in just about every color possible, patterns range from stripes to spots and everything in between. They are an awesome way to add a splash of color to your reef tank! Most of them are completely smooth, with the an occasional one being bumped or having slight texture. Unlike Rhodactis and Ricordea, which are all usually textured and not completely circular.
Being "Soft Corals" they are very easy to care for in the home aquarium. They have easy standards and are a great choice for beginners. They are quite hardy, doing well in almost any type of reef tank. We keep our Discos under low light, they can be kept under higher but only if slowly acclimated. Flow is likely the most important aspect of keeping Discos. LOW LOW LOW! Too much flow and they can detach their foot and float all over your tank, which could pose problems with wave makers and other corals. This makes them perfect candidates for the bottom of your tank, where they can puff out their flesh and grow! These softies don't need to be fed and acquire all the nutrients they need on their own.
Disco Mushrooms are a gorgeous addition to a reef tank! They are easy enough for beginners, and colorful enough even the most advanced reefers can't resist! We regularly have a wide selection of WYSIWYG Colonies and Frags available on our website! Check out some highlights down below and click any of them to shop instantly!
